Gaming, googling and moogling

Before I get to snarky wind stories, I want to talk about what might be one of my new favorite games of all-time.  I’m talking about…

KerPlunk!

I’d never heard of this game until I saw it once on an episode of “Corner Gas” in a throwaway scene.  The other week at a store in Canby called Duebers, I found it in the games section.  I didn’t buy it then, but I found it today and bought a copy for just over ten bucks.  The game is an intricate dance of decisions, support, and consequences.  What I find extra fascinating about the game is that no two games are the same, since the straws are so hard to get into the holes about half way through setting up, one starts jamming them wherever.  I’m not lying when I say I feel a real tension playing the game.  One wrong straw and I could literally lose my marbles.  I find it more riveting than Jenga, and less noisy than Don’t Break the Ice.  For ten dollars, you can do a lot worse in the board game section.

Meanwhile, a quick scan of headlines at my usual South Dakota news sources left my eyes feeling like a predator without prey, a cat without claws, or a sandwich without cheese.  So, I went back a second time and found a few things.

The plan to blanket a big chunk of west river with wind turbines is farther away than I thought.  I’d heard somewhere before that it was closer than the article led on.  I think it would be a great plan, as the wind in the upper Midwest takes few days off.

I always hate to see a high school close.  Especially one that was just about the same size as my old school.

For the record, drive-thru furniture stores are a bad idea.

This story might seem boring to some, but to those who have followed all the DM&E shenanigans it’s rather interesting.

Here’s my nominee for “Headline that sounds dirtier than it really is: South Dakota Division”.

One of my favorite Canadian rock bands is coming to Rapid City.

This story is one I should come back to in June when the film is on SDPB.

For the record, I didn’t do it.

Minnesota’s newest export to South Dakota?

The slowing economy isn’t just impacting housing and consumer confidence, but also marriage.  I’m not here to be all sunshine and rainbows, far from it.  If I had to name one thing Kate and I argued about more than most things, the all encompassing finances would be on top of the heap.  Our spats are nothing to worry about, but it looks like spats of a greater magnitude are causing stress nationwide.  I hear about the assault on the institution of marriage thrown about willy-nilly, but it seems marriage in America has more to worry about than laws that prevent certain people from getting tax breaks and appearing on “Divorce Court”.  Marriage isn’t easy all the time.  Kate and I are lucky that whenever we have a disagreement or even an argument, we realize that our relationship is ultimately more important than whatever we were fighting about.  I’m not saying that’s the key to marriage, but it works for us.

Before I wrap this one up, I’d like to address recent posts I’ve made at Cliffhanger Theater.  I have an endgame for my story, but I’ll be the first to admit the last few entries haven’t been my best.  I’m confident that once I get the main characters to where they’re going, things will even out a bit.  I’m gaining a new appreciation for web and newspaper cartoonists, and their ability to keep a story going with new material every day.  My story will hit part seventy soon, and I’m not stopping until the one  year mark.
