Add a season to “road construction” and “winter”

Have you heard?  It’s rummage sale season!  I’m hoping to bag my limit this year.  In all seriousness, Kate and I have already been garage sale surfing for any and everything baby related.  I found a cute Charlie Brown sleeper, where she’s been looking more for toys.  I found out why on Friday, as one of her friends gave us about four bags full of clothes.  We’re set for clothes, unless our ultrasound tech goofed.  In that case, we’ll either have a sale or raise a tomboy.

In other South Dakota happenings, Faith is about to be stomped by their very own ‘zilla.  I don’t know if stomping out Faith will take four months.  Rex had better pace himself.

South Dakota has a Central South Dakota Enhancement District.  I’m not sure what they do, but I’m all for it.  Maybe they can find their own identity in between the East River and West River camps.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, the easiest way to say it is that South Dakota can almost be split in two.  I’m not trying to say our state is divided or anything.  Believe me, we unite to face our common foe: North Dakota.

Quiz time: this KELO land story on the front page (at the time of me asking) is:
A) a sign of a slow news day
B) typical fluff fare for any newscast
C) another indicator KELO isn’t what it used to be
D) a handy public service

One of South Dakota’s biggest cash cows isn’t a cow.  Since they make that much, those darn birds can pay to fix the mirror that one of their not so bright members broke off my car when it zigged when it should have zagged.

Let’s hear it for this USD grad.  The only cloud in this story’s silver lining is that we need more people like her.

The editor of the Brookings Register lets fly in a way I can only dream of.  Seriously, the Sunday night alt show I do now has been on since 1992 (I’m host eleventy-five or whatever).  Yet almost every week I get calls for music that isn’t alternative, or even our regular format.  Don’t even get me started on everyone that calls during the Rick Dees countdown.  Anyway, this article might be my favorite of all the articles I’ve linked to since I started doing it.

This story is from the Aberdeen American News, but it’s more about North Dakota.  It has some moments, especially a unique way to use old gas pumps.  The dials don’t go over four bucks a gallon?  Easy!  Sell gas by the half gallon.  Problem solved.

Finally, the paper closest to my hometown just wants everyone to get their tabs in order.

Today was a decent day.  Kate and I cleaned out a freezer or two.  Well, she did most of the work, but I was a key supervisor and garbage hauler.  I don’t envy whoever is on garbage pick up tonight.  Shopping for mother’s day was a new experience, since I had to help the wee one so much.  Since baby isn’t scheduled until September, it was hard to get his input on what to get Kate.  Luckily, I was able to manage.  The past week was weird.  It wasn’t especially hard at work, and I wasn’t in the middle of any drama, but I felt somewhat overwhelmed and stressed out.  Hopefully this week isn’t quite so odd in that aspect.

The Marshall Six is open again, and now I don’t feel like I need to turn in my geek cred, as I have seen Iron Man, and lo, it was good.  Great?  Yes, great.  Best comic book movie ever?  Well, I am a bit partial to X2 but I’d say it’s better than any other comic movie not called X2.  I’ll have to see it a second time to decide if it might be time to retire X2 as my favorite.  However, I will not remove Magneto’s escape in X2 from being my favorite scene in any comic book movie.

I suppose I can’t do one of these without mentioning my other places to spew verbiage.  I finally started breaking down the visitor’s guide for Farmington, New Mexico in my blog devoted to a strange month of my existenceCliffy is moving along, and I think after a run of so-so installments, I’m finding my legs again.  I knew some fatigue would set in eventually, but I’m getting excited for the part of the story I’m reaching.  I’ve also played with allignment and colors in one post, and that post happens to be a decent jump on point.  I still like what I’m doing, but I think I’m rapidly approaching the point of having gone too far to bring in new readers.  Luckily, CT is more of an exercise to get my muse going rather than something I’m betting the farm on.

Time to duck out.  Maybe I should say “pheasant out”?

Slow news day

My high school English teacher was right.  The growth of spellcheck will make everyone lazy.  WordPress still hasn’t fixed their spellcheck (and, for that matter, the word count feature) so I hate to write on a computer where I can’t make sure I didn’t mix up my i before e rule.

Anyway, not much in my South Dakota news sources caught my eye.  One of the things that did involved a twine robber.  Who needs the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota, when South Dakota might have the biggest twine snatcher from Minnesota?

Also, my old hometown of Veblen is having an election.  If you want a window into press coverage of an election in a town of about 300, it’s worth reading the questionnaires the candidates filled out.

My blog focus is getting a bit single minded.  I wanted this to be a blog I’d update more often, but it’s becoming almost like my MySpace blog.  I’m only updating it once a week.  I’m still waiting for my Farmington visitor’s guide to follow up on my Farmington blog, and I’ve been so into my cliffhanger theater project.  Also, I’ve been making decent progress on another project, and while I don’t have a shortage of words to input, I seem to be mismanaging my time.

I will work to correct this.

Otherwise, things in my neck of the woods are wood-like.  Kate is feeling a bit better, but the one-two punch of the flu and morning sickness is really making being Kate miserable (on top of being married to me no less).  This weekend we did sneak out to Caboodle Cafe in Lynd.  They’re closing after next week for the summer, so if you don’t make it out before then, pencil them in for the fall.  I’m not sure what it is about the place, but I really enjoy going.  It probably has to do with the great food and friendly atmosphere, but those sound so cliched, even if accurate.

I’ve been hankerin’ to watch The Empire Strikes Back for some weird reason.  I have no idea why.  I think that tonight I might make it a late night and fire up the DVD player.  First off, I need to get a week’s worth of X-Play off the DVR.  That will be quick, as I only watch the reviews and the news segments.  I can usually get a half hour episode watched in about six minutes.

I came close to actually putting a picture of myself as my default image.  How close?  You’ll never know.

I think I captured the water tower’s good side in the one I ended up using.
